THESE LINES THAT DIVIDE US (2021) - DIRECTOR
BBC NEW CREATIVES DOCUMENTARY
What do think when you see the St. Georges cross? Whether the flag is proudly strung out of a
window, dotted around your local pub, or waving manically during a football match, does your
opinion of it stay the same? For some, it’s a bold representation of our country that shows its
strength, unity, resilience, and openness. For others, it's much more complex and difficult to get
behind - associating the image with much more negative connotations of violence and a difficult
history. We aimed to create a short poetic documentary that explored the nations ever-evolving,
and often misunderstood identity through defining images such as the St. Georges Cross. An image
that seems to spark a lot of reaction, but never a lot of fair conversation and debate. Through a
plethora of interviews that offered a wide variety of differing opinions and views from individuals in
contemporary England, the film seeks to uncover the middle ground in this discussion. We wanted
to spark open conversation about the nation's identity, creating a film where contrasting opinions
can co-exist to educate. We aim to highlight the common divide in opinion while also uncovering
the unexpected unity that comes from conversations such as these.
The film features the voices of 5 individuals from a variety of different backgrounds, professions,
and ethnicities, spanning multiple generations, all with differing opinions on their English identity
and the images that define it. Their voices are backed by a series of poetic vignettes that represent
contemporary England. Each vignette creates a vertical slice of the England we live in today and
how they can be viewed from multiple perspectives to form new outlooks and ideas. All of which
are carefully crafted from the opinions and anecdotes of our subjects.
