THE DISTANCE BETWEEN (2021) - DIRECTOR & EDITOR
NARRATIVE SHORT
Charlie, a 24-year-old burnt out freelance Arts journalist, returns to his family home to pack up his childhood belongings. He arrives to his father brazenly telling him the last of his belongings are in the garden shed, his old makeshift den where he spent most of his adolescence. As he finishes packing away the first box, he goes to place it outside the shed and is transported to a make-believe world where he encounters a younger,
10-year-old version of himself. Older Charlie is pestered by his inquisitive younger self who is eager to discover more about his future. The self-reflective conversation leads Charlie on a journey through a plethora of imaginary worlds – forcing him to find acceptance within himself.
Shot in the midst of the November lockdown in 2020, this project proved to be a much more challenging endeavour due to the complexities surrounding COVID-19. The restrictions in place had a substantial effect on the way I would direct and communicate with the rest of the team throughout production, however, it taught me a great amount about the importance of communication on set.
All cast and crew were COVID tested and trained prior to shooting*
